What is Brazilian Limeade?

Brazilian limeade, or more commonly, Brazilian lemonade is a popular drink in Brazil. In Portuguese, the native language of Brazil, the word limão is used for both lemon and lime, which explains some of the name confusion.

Note: Some people might know this recipe by the Brazilian name, limonada suíça, which translates to Swiss Lemonade.

No matter what it’s called, this recipe features a lime juice base given a creamy consistency and slightly sweet, tart flavor thanks to the addition of sweetened condensed milk. For our version, we give dairy-free and refined sugar-free options, but they’re every bit as tasty as the original!

With minimal prep time and a total time of just five minutes, it’s sure to become your new go-to summer drink.

Ingredients and Substitutions

Below is an overview of the ingredients and instructions for this recipe. Be sure to scroll down to the recipe card below for the complete details and nutrition facts!

Vegan condensed milk, fresh mint and limes cut in half on wooden cutting board.
  • Limes – Be sure to use traditional limes, not key limes. Their flavor profiles are very different!
  • Cold Water – This helps blend the ingredients.
  • Sweetener – We use monk fruit sweetener, but granulated sugar, raw sugar, or any sweetener such as honey or maple syrup will work.
  • Sweetened Condensed Milk – Make sure to buy sweetened condensed milk, not condensed milk! Feel free to substitute vegan sweetened condensed milk to keep this recipe dairy-free. (See recipe card for details)
  • Optional Garnishes – Fresh mint leaves and lime wedges are the finishing touches, adding extra brightness and a restaurant-worthy appearance!

How to Make Brazilian Limeade

  1. Prepare the limes. Wash the limes, scrubbing the skin with dish soap to remove any pesticides or wax. Then, slice the limes into quarters.
  2. Combine. Add the half limes to a high-speed blender along with part of the sugar and water. Pulse five times.

  1. Strain. Pour the blended lime mixture into a fine-mesh strainer over a pitcher or bowl, straining the liquid. Discard the pulp.
  2. Repeat. Add the remaining limes, water, and sugar to the blender, and repeat, blending and straining.

  1. Combine. Pour the strained lime mixture back into the blender, and add the sweetened condensed milk. Pulse to combine and blend. Or, pour the lime mixture into a large pitcher, and stir in the sweetened condensed milk.
  2. Serve. Add ice, and stir again. Then, serve the limeade with mint leaves and lime slices as garnish. Enjoy cold!

Common Questions

Why is my Brazilian limeade recipe bitter?

The white pith of the limes can cause limeade to become bitter. To prevent this, feel free to slice the lime and remove it before making your limeade.

Can I make this recipe ahead of time?

This recipe is best served fresh. However, if you have leftovers or want to prepare in advance, omit the ice, and store the drink in the fridge for up to one day. Give it a good stir to redistribute the ingredients before serving.

Can you make this recipe without condensed milk?

Yes, you can substitute coconut milk. Just keep in mind that the taste and texture won’t be quite the same!

Description

Make this easy Brazilian limeade recipe with four simple ingredients for a sweet, creamy, refreshing summer drink! Refined sugar and dairy-free options.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 4 limes, divided
  • 5 cups water, divided
  • 1 cup monk fruit sweetener or sweetener of choice, divided
  • ¼ cup sweetened condensed milk or vegan condensed milk (sweetened or sugar free)
  • Mint leaves and lime slices, to garnish

Instructions

  1. Wash the limes thoroughly by scrubbing the skin with dish soap to remove any pesticides or wax.  Slice the limes into quarters.
  2. Add half the limes to a high speed blender with ½ cup sugar and 2 ½ cups water. Secure the lid on the blender and pulse 5 times.
  3. Place a fine-mesh strainer over a pitcher or large bowl and pour the blended lime mixture through the strainer. Press the rest of the liquid through the strainer into the bowl or pitcher. Discard the pulp. Repeat with the remaining limes, sugar, and water.
  4. Pour the strained lime mixture back into the blender and add the condensed milk. Pulse again to blend. Alternatively, pour the strained lime sugar mixture into a larger pitcher, then stir in the condensed milk with a spoon. Add ice and stir again.
  5. Garnish with mint leaves and extra lime slices, if desired.
  6. Serve immediately or keep in the fridge (without ice) for up to 1 day.

Notes
